US Bank Stadium - Minneapolis, MN

Architect: HKS, Inc.
Client: MG McGrath, Inc.
The U.S. Bank Stadium is a 73,000-seat venue completed in 2016, programmed to host the NFL Minnesota Vikings plus numerous civic and cultural activities throughout the year. Located in downtown Minneapolis, the building features a zinc metal cladding panel system on all exterior wall elevations and roof copings totaling approximately 400,000 sq.ft. During construction, cladding panels disengaged from their support under wind pressures below the design value. On behalf of the system installer, AVRO investigated and analyzed panel disengagement using nonlinear Finite Element Methods to determine failure mechanisms and threshold wind pressure performance limits. AVRO advised on, reviewed, and incorporated component testing for non-standardized materials and configurations to determine acceptable performance for remediation design. AVRO designed system remediation, providing site repair specifications for municipal, owner, architect, contractor, and their expert engineers’ review. AVRO provided expert witness testimony for mediation related to design and construction defects. As part of mediation resolution, AVRO became Engineer of Record for the remediated cladding system on this nationally important project.
